The Architectural and Historical Reserve “Old Plovdiv”

Architectural and Historical Reserve “Old Plovdiv” is located on three of the hills of Plovdiv – Nebet Tepe, Jambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe, also known as the Three Hills. It combines the spirit and architecture of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian Revival. The old town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Plovdiv.

Centuries-old cultural layers determine today’s appearance of the Old Town. Ancient, medieval and Renaissance monuments coexist in unique unity. Here are archaeological sites, museums, galleries, ancient buildings, functioning temples with rich history and decoration, hotels, cafes and restaurants, school buildings, newer residential buildings, romantic courtyards, picturesque cobbled streets. Adjacent to the Ancient Theater is the main building of the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts (founded in 1964). The Geo Milev Primary School (founded in 1906) rises on the southeastern slope of Dzhambaz Tepe, next to Vazrazhdane Square. In the house-museum of Hristo G. Danov was located the first publishing house in Bulgaria.

A cobbled street in the historic old town of Plovdiv, Bulgaria

People of different nationalities and religions have traditionally lived in peace in the old town for hundreds of years. At the southeastern foot of the Three, Hills is the gipsy neighbourhood, named Hadji Hasan, at the south is the Catholic area, and at the western foot – Dzhumaya mosque, built in the 14th century. During the last century, a large Armenian community also lived here. In the heart of the area are located the Armenian Church “Surp Kevork” (St. George), the Armenian Cultural Center and Primary School “Victoria and Krikor Tyutyunjian”, founded in 1834.

The old town is a magnificent place during the day, but also in the evening. The panoramic view over the city from the Nebet Tepe is just breathtaking. The old Plovdiv is only two hours drive from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. You can very easily reach it by car, public bus and train. It could be a perfect one-day excursion from the capital, although I would recommend staying at least 2 or 3 days.

Plovdiv is a starting point for exploring the unique region of Eastern Rhodopes. I’d recommend a book entitled: “Eastern Rhodopes: Nestos, Evros and Dadia – Bulgaria and Greece”
This book covers this wild, rugged mountain range in Bulgaria together with the adjacent National Park of Dadia, the Evros Delta and the Nestos Delta in Greece. Like any other Crossbill Guide, this title answers two questions: what makes this area so special, and how can I see this for myself.

A nice collection of books about Bulgaria.
