The old steam engines and trains near Ruse, Bulgaria

The construction of the old railway station in Ruse began in 1863 and was completed three years later. It is located in Ruse’s outskirts (today this is not far from the city centre), near the Danube river’s high bank, opposite the city of Giurgiu, Romania. Nowadays, the building houses the National Transport Museum, one of Bulgaria’s coolest museums and my favourite.

It has two exhibitions, indoors and outdoors. There are over ten steam engines outside the building, including the oldest preserved steam engine in the country (P 3/3 z class built-in 1868 in England), and various trains, including the King Ferdinand of Bulgaria’s and Boris III’s carriage, and the Turkish Sultan of 1866’s carriage.

The Museum has been underfunded since 2007. The engines and trains have been stored in the open air without much of a maintenance. The primary threat is the moist coming from the nearby Danube River, and now the rust and the dirt can be easily noticed on the steam engines and carriages’ surfaces. Regardless of the negligence, they are still in good condition, and even were used in movies, like in one of the favourites of the older generations “Captan Petko Voivoda.”

The railway station’s construction was the beginning of a larger project executed under English, French, and Austria-Hungarian pressure – the Rousse-Varna railway. It was designed to shorten journeys from London to Istanbul by five or six days.

Nearby the stations’ building was constructed a water tower, a supporting wall of the river, and a few other installations. Inside the building, there is a waiting room, a station manager’s office, and some other premises. Now they are used to house the indoor exhibition.

The place is lovely, especially for kids and steam trains maniacs.

Please note, the Museum is not open every day, so it would be a good idea to call first before visiting. Below you can find the web site of the Museum. It is in Bulgarian only –
