The town of Ivaylovgrad is located in the farthest parts of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains along the middle reaches of the Arda River and its tributaries Byala and Luda Reka.
After the wars and the surrender of Aegean and Eastern Thrace to Greece and Turkey, many Bulgarians left their native places and went to Bulgaria. Thus, the depopulated Ivaylovgrad and villages in the region became home to Bulgarian refugees from Aegean Thrace, Edirne, returned to their homeland Asia Minor and some Bulgarian families from Macedonia.
It is the only city in Bulgaria, from which, heading straight north, you reach Greece. This is a fun fact because Greece in genera is south of Bulgaria.
The area around is rich in cultural and natural landmarks.
Aterenski Bridge is a late medieval stone bridge over the Armira River (also called Aterenska) in the Eastern Rhodopes, about 7 km east of Ivaylovgrad. It has been declared an archeological and cultural monument of local significance. The current bridge was built in the 16th century on a Roman road leading to the Aegean Sea, and later connecting the fortified town of Lutitsa with the area. The bridge is very well preserved, and a newly built road is leading directly to it.
The church “St.St. Peter and Paul” is the only preserved building of the former monastery in the village of Lambuh, Eastern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria. It was built in the first half of the 19th century, in a natural high place. There are steep slopes on three sides, and only on the east side – “Vratnitsite” was possible to enter the monastic complex. The church is a three-nave basilica. There is no bishop’s throne. Two slabs with rosettes are built into the floor. In 1913 the church and the monastery were looted and devastated by the Turkish Army.
Ivaylovgrad Reservoir is located along the lower reaches of the Arda River before the river left Bulgaria’s territory and continued in Greece. The dam was built in 1964. According to a preliminary plan, the dam was supposed to have a wall 105 m high, and then it would be the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. It was not built that high because it would flood the mines near Madzharovo, which are currently closed and abandoned. Today, the dam’s wall is 71 m high, and the dam is the longest in Bulgaria – 30 km., with an area of 15 km².
